Have you been thinking about trimming your own dogs nails at home? Grinding your dogs nails is the best option, as cutting them tends to leave them sharp and can split the nail damaging it. Grinding your own dogs nails at home is easy to do, but it will take some preparation.
To get your dog used to you doing his/her nails at home, do the following:
Get your dog used to touching his/her paws by playing with them frequently
Take the grooming tool and turn it on and let your pup listen to it to become used to the sound (a vibrating toothbrush can be used until you order the grooming tool and it arrives)
Touch the non-rotating end of the grooming tool to your dog side and feet to get him/her used to the vibrations over time
ALWAYS use positive reinforcement with dog treats during all of the above steps and reassure your pup
You can start off by only doing 1 nail a day to get them used to the grooming tool. Eventually you'll be able to Dremel them all down within 5-10 minutes.
I have been using the Dremel 7300 Pet Nail Grooming tool for two years now personally and have just recently started using it professional for my grooming business.
It works on both normal and thick dog nails and is re-chargeable. It comes with a few coarse grit sanding bands but I also recommend going to your local Lowes or Home Depot and picking up a pack of fine grit (240) sanding bands. I use the fine grit ones after the coarse grit bands as it helps to smooth out the nails immensely and make them less sharp.
You can pick up the Dremel 7300 Pet Nail Grooming Tool on Amazon for $32 with 6 coarse sanding bands.
